Applying for an Internship - Plant Genome Research Program

Important Dates and Information

All application documents must be received or postmarked
by Friday, February 5, 2010.

A complete application will contain the following documents:

• An official copy of your transcripts
• Two confidential letters of recommendation from faculty who are familiar with your academic work. Provide each recommender with this Recommendation Form
• Submission of the Online Application Form

How to Apply

Step 1: Request two letters of recommendation from academic faculty and your official transcripts. Electronic submission is preferred, but hard copies will be accepted.

Electronic letters of recommendation should be written on official department letterhead in PDF format and emailed to Tiffany Fleming at pgrp-outreach@cornell.edu directly from the recommender’s official school email account, and contain all contact information from the recommender.

We strongly prefer to receive letters of recommendation electronically, but recommenders may alternately provide you with official letters in sealed and signed envelopes. In that case, send your official transcripts and two recommendation letters in one envelope to:

Notification of Acceptance: March 2010

Step 2: Register to access the Online Application A two-minute registration process verifies your name, email and citizenship status. Then you will receive an email containing a registration code that will grant you access to the online application.

Step 3: Complete the Online Application Form

To complete the online application you will need the following:

• A registration code that will be sent to you via email following registration
• Current GPA
• A list of completed classes, labs, internships and other experiences that you think qualify you for this internship
• Current resume (Please note that formatting will not be retained when submitting)
• A 1-2 page essay that addresses the following question:
• "Describe why you would like to participate in a research-based internship and what you hope to gain from participating in this internship. Include how this internship relates to current academic plans and your future career goals. Please, feel free to incorporate any other information that you feel is relevant to your application."

Prepare the above documents in Microsoft Word before you begin the online application. Then cut and paste your documents into the appropriate fields in the application. Note all formatting will be lost. We estimate that it will take less than one hour to complete and submit the online application form. Plan to complete and submit the online application in one session. Incomplete applications cannot be submitted and will not be saved.
